Types of Removable Dentures

Dentures are a classic, proven, and reliable solution for the replacement of missing teeth. Replacement of missing teeth is vital to your dental health for both esthetics and function, and can help you feel more confident in chewing and smiling. Based on your lifestyle and dental needs, our dentists will help you decide if dentures are the best option for you.

Dentures are made of prosthetic teeth projecting from a pink, gum-colored base. They are designed to look like your own natural teeth, and offer versatility for the replacement of missing teeth. Dentures can be full or partial, and can be fully removable or held in place by dental implants.

There are three types of removable dentures:

Temporary Dentures

Temporary dentures can be complete or partial based on a patient’s needs and are also referred to as immediate dentures. Temporaries ensure that a patient will still have a natural-looking smile while healing from extraction, or while waiting for other cosmetic restorations fabricated in a dental laboratory. These are commonly used to temporarily treat a dental emergency if a tooth is knocked out from an accident like contact sports, or if a tooth needs to be removed due to infection.

Partial immediate dentures may be secured in place by a metal wire that works like a retainer and is removable at night. A temporary denture is meant to last only a few months, during the healing process, so making a follow-up appointment for a more durable and sustainable denture is essential.

Partial Dentures

If you have mostly natural teeth, partial dentures could be a good solution for partial tooth loss. A removable partial denture is designed to replace one or some of your missing teeth, and will help you eat and speak more securely. Removable partial dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to pink or gum-colored plastic bases. The partial denture base is connected by a metal framework that attaches securely to your natural teeth with metal clasps.

Complete Dentures

If you are missing all of your teeth, complete dentures could be the best option for you. Complete dentures are made from impressions of your gums, and replace all of the teeth in the upper arch, lower arch, or sometimes both arches. Well-made and well fitted complete dentures can mimic your natural teeth. A complete denture is highly customizable– since we are replacing all of your teeth, we are able to choose the shape, size, and color to best fit the proportions of your face.

Benefits of Dentures

Replacing missing teeth with dentures offers several benefits. Dentures are typically the quickest and most affordable solution for the replacement of missing teeth. There is no surgery involved, and no needles or local anesthetic required.

Properly made dentures should be custom-fit to your teeth and jaw and should fit well with little or no adhesive. Dentures can look very natural, and will help you feel more confident in your smile. Dentures also can help you maintain proper function, chewing, and digestion, giving you more nutritional value from your food. If dentures are the right solution for your smile, our dentists can help you make the denture process quick and affordable, to help you regain your smile.

Caring for Your Dentures

Denture wearers should brush their dentures before inserting them after eating or drinking to keep them fresh and clean. They can be soaked in denture cleaner or denture tablets to remove stains and plaque if needed. If you have dentures that are ill-fitting or show signs of wear, our dentists can adjust them or re-fit them so that they fit properly and comfortably.
