Types of Whitening for Tooth Discoloration
Over time, your natural teeth can become yellow and discolored. Certain foods with dyes, smoking, and drinks such as coffee or red wine can further stain your teeth. Brushing immediately after eating or drinking can help prevent staining but will not permanently eliminate the risk. Luckily, there are many solutions to whiten your natural teeth.
Teeth whitening, or sometimes called tooth bleaching, is a simple and non-invasive treatment that can change the color of your natural tooth enamel. For those who have discoloration, teeth whitening will oxidize the surfaces of your tooth to lift stains and enhance the appearance of your smile.
Treatment options for whitening dentistry includes:
- In-office whitening with Zoom! Teeth Whitening, for the fastest and most dramatic results
- Customized trays and professional take-home whitening gel to brighten your smile from your own home
Dr. Lee and our team are happy to walk you through your unique situation to recommend a customized treatment best for you. Call us at (203) 259-7073 to ask about it, or simply talk to us at your next appointment.
In-office Whitening With Zoom!
Zoom! is a revolutionary product that effectively whitens teeth in one appointment, in as little as one hour. Because of the strength of the whitening gel, Zoom! can only be done in our office under the supervision of our trained and qualified staff.
In-office bleaching requires a short preparation period where your gums are thoroughly covered with a protective layer to minimize any risk of damage. Zoom! gel is applied to the teeth, and a special blue light lamp is shined on the teeth to activate and accelerate the gel. Zoom! is completed in four sessions of 15 minutes each. While the gel is working, you can sit back and relax, and watch the TV show of your choice.
Custom Trays and At-Home Whitening
Whitening at home is a great option for those who want a whiter, brighter smile, but are prone to sensitivity. We can discuss your past history of sensitivity and determine the strength of the whitening gel and the amount of time the gel should be applied to minimize the chances of future sensitivity.
At-home professional whitening requires two office visits. During the first appointment, your teeth are digitally scanned with our iTero scanner to get an accurate impression. This digital scan is used to construct custom fitted plastic trays. At the second appointment, we try on the trays for correct fit, and give you professional whitening gel with instructions on how to apply and use it at home.
Is Teeth Whitening Permanent?
The effects of teeth whitening are not permanent. Maintenance with regular dental visits is critical to maintaining your newly brightened smile. A touch-up will likely be needed every few years. Genetics and habits (such as smoking, or drinking coffee, tea, and wine) will determine how long whitening lasts.
What About Over-the-Counter Strips or Trays?
We do not recommend store-bought whitening strips or whitening trays. As these are over-the-counter products, the bleaching agent is not as strong as the professional, medical-grade teeth whitening agent we can use in the office. Store-bought strips do not seal adequately around the gumline, and may lead to gum irritation or damage. Bleaching agents may also leak through your saliva due to lack of fit, which further reduces effectiveness of the bleaching product and makes the process more uncomfortable for you.
Professional Whitening Treatments
We recommend that you visit our dentist in Fairfield, CT, for the most effective, professional teeth whitening solution. A professional-grade teeth whitening solution is much more effective than other store-bought options and is safer for your gums and teeth. Before we perform any bleaching techniques, we will schedule an oral exam with our dentist to ensure your gums and teeth are healthy enough for professional teeth whitening.
For whiter teeth and more dramatic, immediate results, in-office whitening with our dentist is your best option. Feel free to contact us at (203) 259-7073 to schedule a consultation and get the bright, white smile you’ve always wanted!
